Winning the girl in She's Out of My League was no dream date for Jay Baruchel, writes Donna Walker-Mitchell. Actor Jay Baruchel has been in showbusiness since he was 12 years old but there were days on the set of She's Out of My League that had him questioning his career choice."Oh, dear god, yes," the 27-year-old laughs. "I think you can probably guess which days those were. There's a scene where a dog is licking my crotch, for instance. Not a good day."She's Out of My League tells the story of Kirk (Baruchel), an average guy who meets the woman of his dreams, Molly (played by Alice Eve). While he initially doesn't think he can win her affection - thanks in part to his family and friends, who put him down (in their eyes, she is a perfect 10 and he is a five) - Kirk asks Molly on a date and, to his surprise, she is charmed by his quirky ways.In New York, Baruchel tells Metro he immediately empathised with Kirk. "If I've done my job, Kirk is the quintessential everyman," he says. "It's not as if he's unhappy with his life and Molly makes him happy ... I know a lot of guys who I grew up with who were just content to do their job then go home."Baruchel, who has appeared in films including Million Dollar Baby and Tropic Thunder, is different. "I'm ambitious by Canadian standards," the Montreal native laughs. "So, in that sense, I'm not like Kirk."A bonus was shooting in Pittsburgh, which often gets a bad rap in the US because of its steel-city image."One of the things I'm proudest of with this movie is that it's a love letter to Pittsburgh," Baruchel says. It's also a shining vehicle for breakout star Eve, who plays the perfect 10. Not that she thinks such a woman exists. "A perfect 10?" Eve asks Metro."I don't think so."We're human. I had no idea Molly was meant to be the perfect woman until the whole marketing campaign started."At the time I just thought she was Kirk's perfect woman. She makes money, she has a business, she's nice, honest and she dresses well, which is always important."Ask her if she has any insecurities and Eve remains tight-lipped. "Of course I do," she laughs. "Everyone has insecurities, no matter what they look like. I'm just not going to point mine out."SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUEDirector Jim Field Smith Stars Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve, Krysten Ritter. Rated MA.Out April 1.
